I bought this book on a whim, looking for something different rather than your standard celeb chef cookbook or in your face DIET, DIET, DIET! cookbook, and I found a little piece of heaven in Twisted’s cookbook.
Having a peep at a few recipes while taking pictures (not gonna lie) I decided it’s well worth a £10, I’ve been cooking a lot out of it over the past 2 weeks or so, the recipes are ridiculously simple, even for a novice.
If you like carbs you will love this book (it is carb heaven),but i wasn’t looking for the latest 10 push ups + quinoa = a six pack book. The sections of the book took me by surprise, your standard Appetisers, Starters, Mains & Dessert have been replaced with things like Picnic, Game Night, Curry Night and Hangover Saturday Breakfast which I think most people would forgo the dodgy bum run after a heavy night drinking, and that super spicy donna kabab you saved for brekky the next morning, if only you had made something a little less arse achy, well this is your cure for all of that.
There’re so many little recipe gems in this book that it was hard to pick which ones I wanted to cook off, and I kind of picked all things.... chicken.... fried chicken, chicken Schnitzel, chicken 65, chicken sliders.... I have a problem, anyway I settled on the 'Upside Down Camembert Linguine', ' Baked Buffalo Crack Wings', 'Really Good Fried Chicken Sandwiches', 'Chicken Caesar Schnitzel Sandwiches', 'Milk Buns' and finally the 'Ham & Mushroom Croque Madame'.
I found the recipes and methods really easy to replicate and follow, I think most people would appreciate that there’s not 10,000 ingredients in the recipes before you can start any dish which is why I can see a lot of people are tuned off to buying some cookbooks for that reason.
The Twisted brand comes from two lads, Tom Jackson & Harry Bamber, Tom’s a talented Chef & Harry is a Videographer which they set about making some food videos and publishing them on social media. It took them six week and they gained one million followers (not jealous at all......) today Twisted is a team of 12 based in east London and their following has grown to 30 million people worldwide.
What I loved about these guys and Twisted was their ethos on food in general, that food should be fun and there really is no right or wrong way to cook provided it’s right for you, this is something that we live by and what black apron is all about, these guys absolutely smashed it with this cookbook.
“The Really Good Fried Chicken” this is possibly the best fried chicken you can make which is the next best thing to deliverooing the colonel to your front door step, super crispy, great flavor I’d give it a 9/10 as I added a few more herbs & spices after and found it a little better.
“Chicken Ceasar Schnitzel Sandwiches” in our house it’s all about the schnitzel (saying in a loud German accent) now, I’ve always loved a Caesar salad so when you put it on a Milk bun with some really crispy, lemony chicken I’m sold, I give it a 10/10 I added some Crispy Chicken skins so as not waste them but it also gave it a strong roast chicken flavor.
“Ham & Mushroom Croque Madam” I’ve made a few Croque Monsieur & Madams in my time in the kitchen but this was next level, the mornay sauce & sourdough give it incredible depth of flavor accompanied with wiltshire ham & sautéed button mushrooms you’ve got an ultimate power sarnie, not to mention the little sunny side up egg on top, this is just perfection for anytime of the day.
“Milk Buns” super simple to make if your a novice in baking bread, this recipe yields great results everytime. Giving you super shiny buns which I jazzed up by adding a touch of chillie flakes, oregano and thyme on top for a little varity.
“Baked Buffalo Crack Wings” the clues in the name with this one, i presume they’re called Crack wings because they are super addictive (don’t do crack, do wings instead) the franks hot sauce butter emulsion on these is unreal and now i don’t see any other sauce competing or even staying in my cupboards beside mountains of franks and kilos of butter, catch you all on the fat side ✌🏻.
This book is a must have for any home cook, it is a book that is full of something that 99% of cookbooks sorely lack and that is invention. their recipes are inspired, contempory and extremely well executed. It is available at most good book shops and some rubbish ones as well. it goes for about £14 on Amazon, but you can get itr second hand for about £10
